Tuesday, January 5th through Friday, January 8th was career week at Owens Intermediate. Each day was dedicated to a different university, On Wednesday the 6th, we had three very special guests, who were all former Owens Intermediate students. Ricky Gonzalez graduated from 6th grade in 2001 and now studies Marketing and Spanish at Notre Dame University. Rocky Chavez graduated from Owens in the mid-90s and has gone on to become a doctor. Sebastien Bauge graduated from Owens in 2002 and now studies journalism at Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. All three guests gave inspirational speeches in five different classrooms about their time at Owens, their educational experiences, and their path to their current or future career. This was a fantastic experience for our students, and we need to thank Mrs. Gonzalez, our school counselor, for planning the entire event.




owensintsign: Bessie E. Owens Intermediate is the G.A.T.E. Magnet School for the Bakersfield City School District. Owens Intermediate is a 4th-6th grade campus. The campus serves approximately 500 students who either reside in our neighborhood or are bussed in from other areas to attend the G.A.T.E. program. Our school has a wonderful, dedicated staff. We have a wealth of technology and programs to suit every student's needs. We are lucky to have an advanced technology lab, science lab, and a full drama and dance program.   • Former Owens student Amy Montano placed 1st at the 2010 BCSD Henry Greve Speech Contest.
  • Owens Students did a great job at the 2009 Kern County Science Fair. 4th grader Selene Orozco earned an honorable mention, 5th grader Garrison Lee earned an honorable mention, 5th grader Jordan Holmes earned a 1st place, and 6th grader Noah Kroeker earned a third place and is an alternate to represent our county at the California State Science Fair. Great job!
