Welcome to Bessie Owens Intermediate




owensintsign: Bessie E. Owens Intermediate is the G.A.T.E. Magnet School for the Bakersfield City School District. Owens Intermediate is a 4th-6th grade campus. The campus serves approximately 500 students who either reside in our neighborhood or are bussed in from other areas to attend the G.A.T.E. program. Our school has a wonderful, dedicated staff. We have a wealth of technology and programs to suit every student's needs. We are lucky to have an advanced technology lab, science lab, and a full drama and dance program. Students in the News

  • Former student Shivam Patel placed 3rd at the 2012 BCSD Spelling Bee.
  • Grace Cecil placed 3rd in Humorous Solo at the 2011 BCSD Oral Language Festival on December 3rd. Our Verse Choir team, consisting of Jessica Tadeo, Justice Spradling, Gilbert Castro, Julian Castro, and Joanne Yi, placed 2nd. Congratulations on the great job. You made us proud!
  • Seven students from Owens Intermediate passed their audition for the BCSD Honors Orchestra. They will be performing on May 23 at Rabobank Arena. The fantastic musicians are: Bryan Ardron, Phoenix Halling, Trevor Kelley, Benjamin Le, Trevor Moore, Jacqueline Peralta, and Daniel Tweedy.
  • Six super scientists from Owens Intermediate competed in the 2011 Kern County Science Fair on March 29th, and four of them actually won prizes at the event. Tadeo Spencer won a first place ribbon. Michele Palmer won a second place ribbon. Pamela Perez won a third place ribbon, and Jose Cisneros won an honorable mention ribbon. Great job!
  • Two students from Owens Intermediate participated in the 1st Annual BCSD Migrant Region 21 Speech and Debate Competition. Jessica Romero participated in the English Debate team that won first place. Pamela Perez participated in the Spanish Prepared Speech and won first place. She also participated in the English Extemporaneous Speech and won second place.
  • Aidan, Celina, and Benjamin from Mrs. Carter's 5th/6th Grade GATE class have their wonderful artwork on display in the BCSD Winter Student Art Gallery. Click Here

  • Owens Students did a fantastic job at the 2010 Kern County Science Fair. 4th grader Bryan Ardron earned a 1st place, 4th grader Edgard Aleman earned an Honorable Mention, 6th grader Garrison Lee earned a 3rd place, and 6th grader Luz Valle received special recognition from the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.
  • Former Owens student Amy Montano placed 1st at the 2010 BCSD Henry Greve Speech Contest.
  • Owens Students did a great job at the 2009 Kern County Science Fair. 4th grader Selene Orozco earned an honorable mention, 5th grader Garrison Lee earned an honorable mention, 5th grader Jordan Holmes earned a 1st place, and 6th grader Noah Kroeker earned a third place and is an alternate to represent our county at the California State Science Fair. Great job!
  • Amy Montano, Mikey Brust, Alex Burdick, and Deziree Lucas and former students Priscila Sandoval, Alex Gomez, and Daisy Castellano all placed at the 2008 BCSD Oral Language Festival.
