The GATE Program
The Magnet Program at Owens School has been specifically developed for gifted and talented students in grades second through sixth. Core curriculum courses are covered using in-depth, differentiated instruction. Our program also includes time for enriched student courses, field trips, guest speakers, and special projects. These programs promote high achievement and self-direction which allow our gifted and talented students to achieve at their fullest potential. The GATE Magnet Program provides a stimulating, challenging environment where the exceptional child can grow and prosper. |

Q&AHow can my child get involved? Students may be nominated by teachers or administrators, and nominations are accepted throughout the school year. All students who are nominated are screened for eligibility. Nominations packets are available in each school office and from school's GATE representatives. In the spring of each year, students are assessed for elgibility. Parental consent is obtained prior to program placement. What is the screening process? Students must meet certain criteria established by the district to be identified as a GATE student. Students are identified as gifted and talented based on a combination of the following criteria:
Students who are new to Bakersfield City School District and participated in a GATE program at their former school are not usually required to take additional testing. How will I be notified if my child is elgible? Parents are notified by letter of their child's elgibility for GATE services, and must return a signed parental consent form before placement will occur. Once identified as gifted and talented, a student does not need to be reassessed for district services in subsequent years |
