Guidelines

The One-Day Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program at Bessie Owens Primary School provides a unique opportunity for GATE qualified students to interact with peers and receive specialized GATE instruction from California Association of the Gifted (C.A.G.) trained teachers.

Literature describing the ideal curriculum for gifted learners refers to the need for thematic, differentiated, interdisciplinary units of study. These units focus on broad-based issues, problems, and global themes.

The universal themes are:
Change
Conflict
Exploration
Force
Order
Patterns
Power
Structure
Systems
and Relationships

The main goal of our One-Day GATE Program is to provide differentiated learning opportunities which will assist students in becoming successful learners.  Exploration and expression of creativity, and specific teaching and learning strategies are emphasized. The importance of the scholarly attributes enable gifted students to connect and apply knowledge within, among, and across the disciplines, as well as to all learning experiences.

Scholarly Attributes

Goals of the Scholars Program:

  • To provide learners with a system to organize information from various disciplines.
  • To promote greater retention of subject matter as students make connections within, among, and scross the disciplines.
  • To connect this learning to ALL learning experiences, not just in the GATE classroom.
  • To apply these concepts at the learner's home school.
